Pomme de Terre River

Swift County Test Sites

Swift County Site 1, along 70th St

This site is in the northern area of Swift County, on 70th Street near the border with Stevens. The other two sites in Swift County are near the southern end of the county and the bottom of the Pomme de Terre watershed. This view is downstream of the bridge where samples were taken.

This is also showing the downstream side of the bridge. This site was the deepest area of the all our sampling sites. The deepest spot here was 6 feet, while most other sites ranged from 1-4 feet.

Swift County Site 2, in Appleton

Stevens County Site 3, along County Rd 51

This view shows the bridge where samples were taken at Site 3 in Swift County, and downstream of the Pomme de Terre River. A noticeable difference between the pictures of Stevens and Swift Counties is that along the Pomme de Terre River in Swift county there are many buffer strips. These buffer strips can be 20 to 50+ feet wide and contain not only shrubs and grasses but many trees that keep soil in place and prevent some nutrients and fecal from flowing into the stream.
